Equity Members Public and Products Liability Insurance

In 1997 Equity introduced Public Liability insurance for members as part of union membership. Equity members who are resident in the UK, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands are covered by this policy. You should be aware there are some exclusions, and other terms and conditions apply.

Please read the policy wording below carefully to ensure it meets with all your requirements. If you feel that your activities fall outside of the policy cover please complete the proposal form below or contact us for a quotation.

Equity Public Liability Policy Wording

First Act administers this policy on behalf of Equity and its underwritten by the Royal and Sunalliance.

In the case of a claim members must contact us on 0208 686 5050 or write to us at Simpson House, 6 Cherry Orchard Road, Croydon, Surrey CR9 5BB, giving the fullest details. You can also download a copy of the full public liability policy from the Equity members web site www.equity.org.uk or get a copy from any Equity office. Please note the policy is only available to Equity members and only valid with a paid-up Equity card.

Policy Questions and Answers:

What type of incident is covered?

This policy protects you against your legal liability to third parties for accidental injury or damage to third party property arising solely from your activities as an artist. The cover excludes liability to any other Artist performing with the insured, regardless of whether or not they are a member of Equity.

Are just performers covered?

No, the cover extends to include teachers, choreographers, theatre designers, stage managers and theatre directors.

What is the limit of indemnity?

This is set at £10 million and this limit is in respect of all claims arising from any one occurrence.

Are any deductions made in the event of a claim?

No, there are no deductions and no excess on any claim.

Are payments made on incidents occurring outside of the UK?

Yes. Policy cover includes any country other than the USA or Canada where you are temporarily engaged in work, provided you are normally resident in the UK.

Am I entitled to claim if I sustain more than one incident in a year?

Yes. The number of claims payable in any single policy year is unlimited.

If I am organising a production, show or the like, do I need to purchase “Top-Up” cover?

Yes. You may also require employers’ liability cover. “Top-up” cover for productions, shows and the like can be obtained from First Act. Please complete the application below and e-mail us with your details, or phone us for a quotation.

What are the principal exclusions?

  • Liability of whatsoever nature directly or indirectly caused by, contributed to or arising from hypnotism, hypnotherapy and the like.
  • Liability arising from or in connection with the insured being involved in a production which is produced or directed by a person or organisation other than themselves.
  • Bodily injury to any employee.
  • Liability arising from ownership, possession or use of any aircraft, aerospatial device, hovercraft, watercraft or mechanical propelled vehicle.
  • Damage to property, which is owned by you or is in your custody or control.
  • Liability arising from radiation/nuclear risk.
  • War, invasion or act of foreign enemy hostilities.
  • Contractual liability.
  • Pollution or contamination other than where sudden and unforeseen.
  • Advice, design or specification for a fee.
  • Liability arising from pyrotechnics, the use of explosives or any special effect involving fire or explosion, other than the use of flash cotton, flash tape and flash paper as these are included in the cover.
  • Liability arising from diving involving the use of breathing apparatus.
  • Liability incurred by you to any other Artist, except where such an Artist is not engaged in their profession as an Artist.

Important Note: Only individual Equity members are covered by this policy. Those members working under a Limited Company or other organisation will need “Top Up Cover”.
